To look at the rose flower of the wild versus the hybridized or cultivated rose is to see some remarkable differences. Also there are advantages to the wild rose variety of the flower for nutritional value to humans and animals. We are going to look at this briefly.

The sacred flower, well it used to be in ancient Egypt but today roses are more of a symbol to express what you feel about a person. A lot has changed over the centuries including the species rose. Standard or modern rose blossoms are very similar to wild blossoms of species roses but many of the hybridized and backyard horticultural varieties have more than the standard rose which has five petals. Of course we know that roses that are bought come in many varieties and there is considerable breeding taking place that alters the genes of rose plants.

Since before the Romans the species rose has grown and the name means exactly as it implies. These roses are the original roses the wild roses. They are simple forms of the modern hybridized roses. They have four or five petals and never have more than that. The wild rose flower comes in about 100 varieties in the whole world versus the over 20,000 hybridized flowering rose plants. The flowers of the wild species rose also are all of the single variety.

What colors do these native roses come in? Usually they only are found in red and pink sometimes white and even harder to find is a true wild yellow rose. There is a very striking quality to the wild rose in that some of them have white and a blushing of pink much like that of the apple blossom colors. Truly pretty.

The five petal roses of the wild rose flower have food that they provide in the form of rose hips that follow the flowers blooming. These colorful rose hips provide food for animals, birds and for ages has served humans well too. Rose hips are known for being very high in vitamin c too. But you won't find these hips in backyard hybridized roses.

However, since the days of the Romans the rose has been cultivated and hybridized. So it has been changing from the wild form for a long time. The Romans created an antique so to speak. It is known as the cabbage rose. It is a hybrid rose from way back and it has been the founder for an entire group of old roses with multiple petals.

Do you wonder how the breeders of the roses managed to produce extra rose petals? How they have managed such awesome rose flowers? I think it is beyond this article but the modern roses breeding shows that there is a close relation between what happens to the rose’s stamens as well as the petals. So there are many roses with little petals of flower on the stamens and little bit of stamens on the petals. You probably will never see that in a species rose.

The species rose also has 5 stamens but some hybridized roses might have yet more stamens on it than this. The changes to the roses have not been bad by any means. The rose plant is a very popular flower. The wild species flower is still cultivated and still beautiful as well. But one could wonder when looking at the species rose and any cultivated rose and wonder if they are the same type of rose flower.
